Andritz to supply EcoFluid biomass boiler plant to Fjernvarme Fyn in Denmark
Austria-headed international technology group Andritz AG has announced that it has received an order from the Danish energy company Fjernvarme Fyn Produktion A/S to deliver a new biomass boiler plant complete with auxiliary equipment for their “Bio Blok 2” project. The plant will be located on Fjernvarme Fyn’s existing combined heat and power (CHP) plant site in Odense, on the island of Funen in Denmark, some 170 km west of the capital Copenhagen.
Heat production at Fjernvarme Fyn’s Havnegade site in Odense covers the vast majority of the heating demand for its customers and is, therefore, a central focal point for the city’s heat production. There are three plants on Havnegade with a total installed capacity of 624 MW heat and 433 MW electricity. The plants currently use straw, waste, and coal respectively, the latter is to be replaced by biomass with the new “Bio Blok 2” project (photo courtesy Fjernvarme Fyn).
The “Bio Blok 2” project is an important part of Fjernvarme Fyn’s goal of abandoning the use of coal at its combined heat and power (CHP) plants by 2022 and contributing to the national objective of a 70 percent reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2030.
Fjernvarme Fyn is the third largest district heating provider in Denmark, and delivers about 97 percent of the district heat requirement in Odense, providing heat for more than 100 000 households and large greenhouses.
The plant will be located on Fjernvarme Fyn’s existing CHP site in Odense and will supply district heat to the Odense area. The plant will be “power ready” for electricity production at a later stage. The start-up of the boiler is scheduled for 2023.
High efficiency and performance
The Andritz scope of supply, the value of which has not been disclosed, includes a biomass-fired boiler with flue gas cleaning and a flue gas condenser with absorption heat pump technology. Based on the Andritz EcoFluid bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) design, the boiler, Andriz says, “combines high efficiency with excellent environmental performance”.
This new plant will be fuelled by woodchips as the main fuel and wood pellets, olive stone, and/or sunflower husks pellets as secondary fuels. The plant is capable of supplying close to 180 MW of heat to the district heating network. The flue gas condenser with heat pump technology after the boiler significantly increases the district heat output and, therefore, will improve the plant efficiency to almost 120 percent.
